MHS Distance Learning Links/Resources

Dear McKinleyville High School Community,
As we work together to create a positive experience for our students during our time in distance learning we thought it would be important to create page dedicated to providing specific information on distance learning at McKinleyville High School as well as links to meetings and resources.  This information will ebb and flow as we continue into the school year.  As always if you have questions about distance learning please contact us and you can always start with me at
Thank you,
Nic Collart

Communication on Back to School Night and a Change to Wednesday's Schedule:

Good evening MHS Community,

I hope you are doing well.  Please take a moment to read this email as it has important information about Progress Reports, Wednesdays, Back to School Night and information for our seniors.

First, Term 1 Grades - Our first term ended on September 25th and  Student Progress Reports will be mailed home October 8th, and are also available on ParentVUE.  These grades are a snapshot of where your student is with distance learning, and do not go on their permanent transcript.  However if your student’s grades are not where you would like them to be that is a great reason to contact their teachers to see how your student can be successful in their classes.

One great way to meet your student’s teachers and get general questions answered is at our upcoming back to school night, on Wednesday October 14 from 6 pm to 8 pm.  This event will be virtual but will allow you to work through your student’s schedule and hear about what is going on in the classroom.  We will be sharing out more information as the week goes on but it is important that we have your correct email so that next Wednesday you can access the virtual meetings.  If you have not received any communication from us this fall through your email please by this Friday contact our office at 839-6405 so that we can resolve this and or if you do not use email please let us know so that next Wednesday we can help you use your student’s email to join us.

Secondly, as we have received feedback from our students, you and our staff we are going to be adjusting our Wednesday schedule starting this Wednesday, October 7.  For students who do not need to meet with our teachers except to check in, at 8:45 they will join their 1st period class just like they do every Monday and Thursday to take roll.  At 9:00 am to 10:00 am teachers will hold open office hours for periods 1, 2 and 3, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm teachers will also hold open office hours for periods 4, 5 and 6.  From 10:00 am to 11:00 am and from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm teachers will be able to set individual meetings with students and or groups of students as needed to support more specific questions, assignments and needs.  Finally, for any students that missed the early check in, admin will hold an afternoon check in from 3:00 to 3:15 for students to get their attendance for the day and to say hello.  We will update the school’s website to reflect these changes by tomorrow morning.

Third and finally, for our seniors there are a few key pieces of information to know about:

Tomorrow is our FAFSA (financial aid) workshop from 1pm - 4pm and 5:30pm - 7:30pm.  This is a FREE opportunity for your senior and you to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid.  Your senior could qualify for FREE money towards vocational school, community college, OR a four-year college!

Tonight, please complete your FSA ID (your senior will be able to show you how to do this).  Then tomorrow, both you and your senior can complete your parts of the FAFSA.  By participating in this workshop, your senior will be entered in a drawing for a $1000 scholarship!

If you have any questions please email Mrs. Anne Sahlberg

While December is still about two months away we want you to know that seniors portraits are due by December 18.  We hope knowing this date will allow you to take advantage of our beautiful fall weather instead of our rainy winter weather.  You can email senior portraits to

Thank you always for your support and please contact us with any questions.

Have a great evening,

Trouble Shooting StudentVUE Logins
Below is the email our Director of Technology sent out to help students navigate and troubleshoot entering their classes through StudentVUE.   You can also click on this link to go directly to where you should sign in with zoom:
"Good evening Panthers,
Thank you for your patients today as we work out the kinks.  I know there were widespread issues joining classes.  In light of this we are changing some things regarding joining classes.
Firstly, if you have not done so already, you need to activate your zoom account.  If you are not active, you will get stuck in a waiting room indefinitely.  If this happens to you, please reach out to me.  Please try and join a class before you reach out, as many of you have successfully activated already.
Secondly, when joining a class, make sure (if prompted) to 'Join Using Google'.  You should not enter an email and password if prompted when joining your class.  You may need to click 'sign in' on the top of your screen, otherwise scroll down a bit in order to see it (depending on the device you are using).
Thirdly, to join classes tomorrow you will need to go to your Class Schedule in Student VUE.  When class is in session, the link to join the class will appear there.  If for some reason the button does not appear during the scheduled time, refresh your page.  In extreme cases you may need to log out and back in (unlikely but possible).
Lastly, if you are using a Mac, you will need to download and use the Chrome browser.  Safari has known issues with Google (and in turn Synergy) and will not work.  If you are having trouble with this let me know.
Have a restful night, and hopefully you won't hear from me tomorrow :)

Message from the Northern Humboldt Union High School District Office:

While the return to school this fall is not what any of us envisioned, we have been hard at work at preparing to serve healthy meals for our students.

There will be some significant changes to the food service program this fall. Regrettably, the primary one is related to the payment system. In March, when our schools closed because of COVID-19, the USDA (the federal agency that oversees the nation's school lunch and school breakfast program) allowed all schools in the US to provide meals at no cost to all students. That has not been extended for the new school year as of now.

Therefore, we have to go back to the way that we provided meals before COVID-19, which means that students who are certified as Free or Reduced, will receive their meals at either the free or reduced price. Students who are not eligible for free or reduced priced meals will be charged for their meals, in the same way as in previous years.

Food Services for the beginning of the school year at NHUHSD will be grab and go Breakfast & Lunches on Mondays and Thursdays. We will send home 3 days worth of meals on Monday, and 2 days worth of meals on Thursdays. Serving times are 11am to 1pm. We are only able to serve students who are enrolled in NHUHSD at this time. Please have your student's 5 digit lunch number ready, We can also look up by the student's name. If you have any questions regarding this, please give Carrie Nickols a call at 707-839-6484 or email her at
