Information and panel discussion with recent MHS grads addressing scholarships, financial aid, FAFSA / CADAA, community college & career tech training, and next steps for choosing your four year college after receiving acceptance letters.

and say again Welcome to our next steps for seniors translation is available tonight the button at the bottom for interpretation allows for that option thank you and will try one more time okay so I'd like to begin with a land acknowledgement we are I am in Eureka California and I am currently in the ancestral traditional and current on lands of the we are people's the map at native land. CA has an opportunity for you to learn about the land on which you live to find out which tribes have been there since time immemorial another way to honor and acknowledge that residents of our tribal peoples is to perhaps take advantage of learning language and culture this is a current opportunity offered through two feathers Nabil Burbank provides Wednesday and Friday in the yurok language tonight's presenters myself I'm in Solberg and mrs. Harmon would you like to say hello Schurr High everybody thank you for joining us a little bit different than the presentations at musselburgh and I usually do but we're excited to be here thank you thank you so Vanessa Cota is our Trio advisor she is working as our interpreter for the first half of our informational session Myra would you like to say hello I don't know my referee Ableton Mike right now later on we will have our graduates that are listed here introduce themselves and talk about the school that they are currently attending and their Majors go ahead to the informational pieces so to our agenda again we're split into two session two sections when is our first 30-minute informational agenda and then the second half will be a quite Q&A with our panelists and also if you're here and you'd like to have a one-to-one consultation with mrs. Harmon or I will be able to go in to break out rooms for that and mrs. Herman could you monitor the chat on for the next few slides thank you the first part of our presentation has to do with scholarships and financial aid so applying is a part-time job so important to view it this way because you have an excellent wage potential if students apply to a few scholarships over 3 hours and let's say you are awarded 600 you just earn $200 an hour so again looking at the ID applying for submitting your FAFSA and applying for scholarships that will lead to free money money that doesn't have to be paid back so it's a great wage-earner in terms of scholarships locally we have a web call the North Coast scholarship finder and this is something that has become quite quiet well developed in the last 2 years so as you scroll down there's this brief information for each if that's available and obviously it takes time to read this you're looking for the ones that suits you but then they also have this preview feature so if you'd like to come down here and look on preview you can see there is more information you can click on the actual application and also go back then and look for more so I like to point out the North Coast scholarship finder as a local clearing house if you will in terms of general information and if someone could paste the two links in the chat that would be great there's a document I pulled from a Virginia state counseling organization and it just talks about some scholarship hunting tips so again if your Junior your husband game your senior you're looking for a place where maybe where you can how else can I find some money but I wanted to just review this as a resource we don't have time to go into great detail but certainly later on WE kcr mrs. Herman are there any questions yet that we need to answer or things going okay no we're good thank you so sometimes students have come to me and this is Herman and Tidwell how do we apply and the application that so it can be confusing so I know this the first thing you do is read it you know read the instructions read the qualifying features and then ask some questions of us of your teachers if you need a letter of recommendation tomorrow is a great day to ask for 1 March 15th has a lot of dead and then after that you can keep reusing those letters that teacher you've had for several years may be a counselor you've gotten to know know know for a few years a boss or a coach and then print it out if you have a print copy trying to get to so you can write on one is a draft and then the other one you can finish very nicely and neatly or you can complete it online every once in awhile I assume will come to me and say I submitted my application and afterwards we look at it we'll find a mistake so I'll urge you to find someone to hopefully look at that before you submit and then go ahead and submit that after you receive your Awards we love to know I received my first email today avastin saying guess what I got so we lie document that lists and provided an opportunity to recognize it at senior Awards night there are some scholarships that are presented at senior Awards night only students will not know but please notify us once you your Awards committee will often tell you what it takes to actually collect the money you may have to provide proof of enrollment and then they distributed either directly to your college or they write you a personal check the last step would be to write a thank you card every year students are committees are so grateful and the students are very gracious rating that quick thank-you note how this makes a difference is important for especially for our local organizations this is Herman is there are there any questions we need to there's no questions but one thing that I did want to add is also you know the scholarship list is a great resource but also the college that you your students going to attend look at their scholarship left too because I'm whether it's a community college or 4-year University there's a lot of scholarships available that students that are starting at that school don't know about so that's always a really great Reese words to so for example of your students planning on going to eat chest you go ahead and look up the Humboldt State University scholarship list and you might be able to find some that are for freshman for incoming freshmen so that's also a great resource thank you for that mrs. Herman and it is folks just a quick Google search Humboldt State scholarships UC Davis scholarships and those pop up very quickly thank you Humboldt area foundation is the grand. give local scholarship opportunities or grandmother or whatever opportunities there's over a hundred and sixty scholarships available with a single application now the deadline is next Monday March 5th but if you consider you have Friday Saturday and Sunday if it's your part-time job this could be an opportunity for 250 to $10,000 depending on the award itself there are smaller amounts in larger amounts so the tutorial video I've linked here and the link on if someone can repost that in the chat for our participants that would be great but I want to just to demonstrate the importance of looking at the tutorial video talks about creating your account and then completing the eligibility questions the eligibility questions are really important and while some people may think I know what this is and just click away there are certain tips that they provide show me videos about 8 minutes and it's very straightforward once you complete the eligibility questions it'll show you which ones you've been matched or to apply sometimes students are like to eat I think the record is held by a villager what who actually was able to apply to 43 so you just don't know and so you then go to the application dashboard it'll show you which ones you can apply to watch the tutorial video again I strongly recommend it because it gives you shortcuts on how to not duplicate your work again it's one application but sometimes there's extra essays or if you didn't fill it out a certain way you'll have to keep re-entering some of the details Hanna I know that you also applied for humble area scholarships I'm just wondering if you could there anything else or David anything that I'm missing that you would add about applying to whole area yeah I don't think yeah I think you just have to so just do it don't be lazy and do it it's free money I didn't receive any O'Reilly received like one from Hubble area foundation so and I applied to a lot which was frustrating I don't want to upset like that expectation are students but like there are like a lot of people competing for them so it's also good to try to find my other outside once from your school cuz I had to get I got to that were not for like mac High by the hour like Toys R Us and I got those ones so I think doing more research for like as many as you can it's helpful to yes this is just one tool but thank you for that and I'm going to go ahead and see if I can Advance Financial the other piece of scholarships and financial aid is a filling out that FAFSA so it is critical to complete your FAFSA there are steps on this resources page so it's when again could repost that and what's nice about the resources through our House of program is that they provide the information in both Spanish and English so if if you would like to have be able to talk to your family about it talk to your friends about it it's very user-friendly and the importance of creative applying for that FAFSA is that for you will qualify for the California promise grant that is the free tuition to any California Community College it can be over $2,000 a year I don't know about you but if I could save $2,000 I certainly would and the application you could complete it anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour again not a bad wage also by completing the FAFSA those of you who have completed the FAFSA already you may have qualified for a Cal grant will pay for UC or CSU tuition still have to pay for housing but tuition is covered if you qualify for a Pell Grant that's a federal award these do not have to be repaid the FAFSA also shows you what loans you qualify for in this is farm and we'll talk about that more later do you have to be repaid and in terms of the awards that was Herman shared about scholarships from Hsu or you see those are merit-based Awards based on your academic abilities your interest in a certain field but those colleges also require that you complete a FAFSA sometimes students are like I'm not in a financial bracket where I'll qualify for anything if you don't complete a FAFSA you won't qualify for anything that's a promise so you really need to think about how important that and keep that door open nose to there is like you know a lot of people think oh I'm not going to qualify but there is like the middle class Grant as well so that's something that's not put posted on here but you know if you're falling the middle class bracket you have the opportunity to get a grant with that so that's always a great resource as well thank you for that I forgot to put that I was typing I will make sure it's there next time but it's true though folks there is money out there it's it's just making sure that you have all these pieces in place so you can access it and just to add one more thing lot of scholarships are tied to the fast by 2 so if you don't complete your FASFA you might not be able to get awarded that scholarship so it's important to tie those together as well a lot of them tied to that so true can if you receive a school-based award we'd love to know again always notify us about these wonderful opportunities and when you get here for the students who apply to two different 4-year colleges misses for me cover this in a little bit you want to compare and read those financial aid offers and make sure to ask a lot of questions and and just a reminder you have to do the FAFSA every year too so I know some students yeah we try and remind everybody that but every year that you're planning on attending college the following year you have to do the FAFSA and the fall for that Following fall so it's really important that you do that while your students and college every year planning to be in college for that next year thanks mr. Herman I have to say several students this year I worked with I said now if you have a phone a smartphone or some kind of them calendar on your phone take it out in October 1st put FAFSA and every year when you're done you'll know you'll know to take it out but it's a great reminder yeah thank you very much also if you haven't yet completed your FAFSA and you're planning on Community College you can still submit your FAFSA for the promise Grant and for those of you who have talked to many seniors who aren't sure like what about if I want to take a gap year next fall what if covid-19 were all online again I don't want to start that way you can place this on hold can place your Cal grant on hold you going to place almost all your financial aid on hold for a year so it's it's wonderful again having option about Community College and Career Training a lot of students think I need to go to text will in order to get my certification in welding my certification in automotive but also community colleges offer a lot of career training so if you can go to somewhere like College of the Redwoods for your Career Training options with your free tuition you can end up getting your your AA degree or your career Ed certificate for a lot less money so also you can start a bachelor's degree at a community college that's what this is for me and I both did we started at a community college transfer store for your college nice to be able to graduate debt-free that was one of the ways I was able to manage that so again there's a lot of opportunities in that we have an application Workshop next Tuesday in 5 days from now we have an online Workshop we have emailed all the teachers at McKinleyville High School to ask that you could be released during asynchronous time that's for seniors not for juniors unless you have a special circumstance and it's from 11 to 3 so if you do class time will also be hosting during lunch so I'm there's a link in the chat with your community college application worksheet and while it's straightforward information it's really important that you look at do I have a personal email am I using my legal name so I know at this point a lot of people have names that they are using that there are comfortable with but in terms of the legal framework that you have to go buy you still have to use the one that was assigned to unless you have gone through the process of having it all so this is a quick one minute video I wanted to share about College of the Redwoods and if we can't hear it so many wave at me but hopefully we can or can't you we can't hear anything gun okay I think I heard some so you couldn't hear the audio darn it okay sorry about that I get in the link will be in the chat though so you can check my run oh thank you all right thank you everyone so I'm so we're so blessed to have our interpretation available tonight but I do have to I'm switched our interpreters for so I have to take off the screen sharing for a moment thank you very much Uncle Uber thank you and I think we can update my ride I have a thumbs-up now thank you so again I'm sorry the audio do not work on that little video but it's just an idea of I like the career reflects the other careers selected and not along with the academic courses and this link hopefully will be will show us again it's just a quick view of the degrees that you can you can earn so if you wanted to click on like Arts and Humanities that would have been mine and it has the distinction between degrees for transfer or if you're looking to get an AA degree in a specific field or a general field and then you can also go back and look at safe health and physical education for example in federal wildland firefighter things like that and dim the career link isn't working right now but again Ciara has a lot of different options for Career Training so make sure to tender application Workshop next Tuesday on the link will be available on our website and we'll see you there mrs. Harmon all right so I was just going to talk about going to a 4-year college and what to Spec's in the coming months and just all the 15 through all of the dates and everything that are required because it's really important that you meet those dead are colleges so you know over the next couple of months for the four year universities whether it's a private university CSU or UC your out-of-state you should be getting except notice says so depending on what colleges you applied for some of the csu's come out a little bit later in April but most of them will give you your acceptance letter at the you know at the beginning end of March early April but like I said a couple of them I think they've been pretty impacted with I read somewhere that they had an increase of 17% at the UCS they are giving later notices for acceptance so just to look for that and then once you do hear from them they're going to offer you a financial aid package and I'm going to go over that in detail I'm in the next slide but it's really important that you take a look at all of the different acceptance letters that your student got and take a look at the financial aid package because sometimes it makes more sense to go to one University over the other based on cost maybe you were able to save thousands of dollars at 1 University that you were accepted to versus you know paying out-of-pocket for some other university so I always encourage everybody to look at the financial aid package closely and also if you do have questions you can ask Miss sawburg and I we can interpret some of the operation but also you know call the financial aid department at that University to if you ever have questions about that they are very helpful I have you know when I was a student I was always calling the okay department to get help with one finger and next and they were always really super helpful I know that some of the people at the Hsu financial aid department has really helped Miss all-bergen III over the years we've come in they've helped us with questions and all sorts of things do their great resource as well and then a big date for students for four year universities is May 1st so that's the college Commitment Day that's been set so you know students don't have a whole lot of time to decide once they get their acceptance letter and then they have to decide by May 1st I know last year because of Coke read some universities let students decide in June they pushed back the date I haven't heard anything like that universities are going to do that again this year so I think it's pretty much set for the maze commitment deadline so that's an important to acknowledge and make sure that they they send out something called the SRI which is the student intent to register form and you would need to fill that out if you're planning to register for that University so that's an important Date to Remember and then during that time during in May you're going to want to make sure that you're setting up your portal so you're making sure that the portal if once you've accepted that you're going to that University you're setting up your portal and you're making sure you're getting all the different updates that they're sending they're going to be sending updates regarding housing deposit financial aid registration if you're required to do any early start programs whether you have to take a math or English class as an early start program all the housing update so it's really important that you or your student is checking email regularly and getting all those updates also checking the portal that the university has set up so you're not missing any deadlines or dates are deposits or anything like that also make sure that and we encourage our seniors to do this but make sure that you set up you know your school email so just you know that's like the there be your Lifeline to that University so it's really important that you get that school email setup as soon as you accept and mentoring March and June you know we just really encourage students to keep applying to scholarships March is like a really big month for scholarships and they kind of start to trickle out in April and then we still get some students acceptance letters in May but March March has the big month April also so make sure you're cute applying for the scholarship taking the time to do that get that freak is much free money as you can so if you don't want to have to pay that MoneyPak in loans and and then also some of our students get senioritis so and I totally get it I think everybody has it really early this year so you know just make sure that yours and speaking of students out there two are keeping their grades up so universities will accept you based on what you recorded during your junior year and then they will also require transcript for what you've completed your your fall semester but you know if you end up not passing like your government or your English class or any a through G Class they could pull your admissions so it's really important that you get Caesar better and all those a through G classes and you keep your grades up so I haven't had too many students have that issue but you know if you're kind of senioritis right now just make sure that you're keeping those grades up and then also and too many students once they get their acceptance notice the university will want you to submit your transcript as well as any AP or IB or test scores that they're requiring so you're going to want to do that and then they'll also want your final trailer scratch to do some universities require a transfer of right now most of them will but then they will also require a transcript after you graduate so generally musselburgh and I when to classrooms and we're able to remind the students hey fill out your transcript request form and we will do that through email but it's really important that your student does that too and I think usually the universities applying for the transcript request is about July 1st and then the AP IB any test scores that they want or July 15th so just just some dates to keep in mind and I will show you on okay you can go to the next line so here's an example of the financial aid packages that students might get so you know if it'll look different from for everybody but we've put together we know this is just kind of like a financial aid pack should a package but has two universities on it so you can kind of take a look side-by-side and see what they're doing so you know they they say okay this is the total cost of attendance and then your expected family contribution to remember on your fast but says efcc what's the expected family contribution so they're expecting families to cover for this sample they're expecting families to cover for UCLA 15,000 for a Boston 16000 so I'm just taking a look at that with your you know expected to cover and then what the financial aid package is looking like so for UCLA UCLA going to give them almost 10,000 dollars in terms of scholarships and grants so money you don't have to pay back is about $10,000 but the Boston University so this was 10 of the great thing about a lot of private schools is they'll give you a lot more scholarship grant money to offset that tuition so you can see the. University is going to give the student $35,000 so that's money that you won't have to pay back work-study so work studies tied to financial aid and some students get it some students don't I I'm not completely sure what the criteria is for getting work study but basically work study is like work that I can do 2 to pay for some of your education so I when I was in at Humboldt State I worked in the chemistry lab and I clean games like equipment in the chemistry labs was part of my work-study so so that would be kind of a sample example of what you could do I've known other people that have worked in the art facilities and cleaned art stuff for you know worked in the Center activities staying in helps people you know get their gear for surfing or whatever that would be like a sample of work-study program and then loans loans with money you do have to pay back so so for UCLA they were giving the student 55,000 for 5500 sorry UCLA and then about 8,500 for Boston so it just depends on the University so it can be very different I know what what the financial aid will give you and what the scholarship package looks like so so that was just a sample of what you know your students financial aid packages could look like from different universities so it's important take a look in just a side-by-side take a look and see what really works for your family and your student and I just want to add to it when I when I read online about work study today they said that you still have to apply for those jobs so well offering that money it may not be guaranteed and you also receive it informs of paychecks so then it's up to you to put it towards your your school bills or if you're putting it towards other things so that's why in this spreadsheet big count that as money out of your pocket until you've actually earned it you look at the totals at least I think mathematically that's how it works out so I'm anyone who knows me knows I don't know again phone number so you want to be wary of loans means paying it back thank you mrs. Harmon and I'm here are some resources I only had one link for the chat so I will make sure we get the others in their butt quickly go through this and you can find this on any of the the universities that your student may be going to they'll have a check list available I can't click on it but maybe you could okay so this is an example of the CSU so Humboldt stay if your students going to stay at this would be a checklist that they would want to look at it just to make sure that they're meeting all criteria in order to get you know started with school in the fall so basically it'll go over you know email and checking in email correspondence information and you know your students aren't going to need to turn in the AC to your SAT scores but if that was the case you know that would be that would be criteria so so just that's a sample checklist so that students would want to be looking at and making sure that they meet the criteria for that I'll get out of there and kill him oh thank you the transcript request form thank you so I talked a little bit earlier about the transcript request so we do at the McKinleyville High website if you go to McKinleyville high and then under the counseling website under students and parents there will be a link for a transfer request form so a lot of time students were able to just come in our offices and fill out the that's not really the case right now so you can do this online so you can find it at the McKinleyville High website and under counseling again and the student this will goes straight to mrs. Edwards who does the transcript request in once you fill out the transcript request form you can say like you know I want it to get sent to San Diego State and then also put like you could say yeah thank you at the bottom on the bottom it would say like I'll pick it up you can mail it there should be a little area that says send one now and then send one at the end of the year to so you would only have to fill this out once there's a second screen but I can't go to it without us completing it so that might be on the second but that's really important for students to remember to do that the universities will really want a transcript from you anything else that I need to I think that was that was great and I'm sorry to be going so quickly with some of this but the resources will be available online will make send it. So please hi I'm Rita I'm first year at College of the Redwoods and currently taking just random classes to see what interest me thank you Genesis hi I'm Hannah I'm a first-year at Chico State and I'm a pre-nursing major thank you and me on please what's up everybody I'm a fourth-year at UC Berkeley and I study neurobiology and David Solis Iran is Dobby I'm a first-year I transferred from Baylor to Butte recently and I'm studying respiratory therapy Caleb please hello Caleb like race I'm at Sea are currently it's my first year and right now I'm Undeclared but I'm struggling studying political science thank you Vanessa please a mindfulness I graduated from Humboldt State University with a degree in political science so keep it up Caleb Myra I just turned off the interpretation so you could introduce yourself to all right I was translating I'm Myra I'm I'm a senior at Humboldt State University and I am I'm doing work-study I work with Cal soap so I'm a success coach at Eureka High School my job is to support families in navigate the financial aid process and Humboldt State University I study environmental science and management thank you very much so participants if you'd like to use the raise hand feature or type in your question we can feel those answers in both Spanish and English and I'll open it up to our visitors and also replace repost some questions in his so if anyone has two would like to ask a question please go ahead and do so scuse me while I find the questions everyone I thought I put them in shops and I did not so I will be her right back so I'll start with this question or for students right now if you were able to give advice to your Junior cell or you're seen yourselves in March of your junior year or March of your senior year what advice would you give yourselves any of the panelists feel free to Mike on I guess I'll pick that one up so I guess if I were to give myself some advice back in high school I would tell myself that I shouldn't be so focused on One path really through college like I I thought I would be like a doctor got your pre-med and and so like I kind of figured out that you know life can take a whole bunch of different past and it's okay thank you others similarly I would just tell myself not to really not to put too much pressure on myself of like what is expected of me or where to go to college I think there's such a stigma behind where you need to go to accomplish things and take it easy anywhere you go and just do as much as you can before you go I think I might have messed with some buttons right now so if people are struggling to unmute please let me know anyone else from our panel care to give yourself some advice I mean I'm just adding on to what they said like agreeing with them not to stick with a certain pathogen like David said put too much pressure cuz like I put my whole life is like I'm going to a four-year like I don't want to go to junior college and then I was like wait but like money like you save so much money going to junior college so I was just better off starting there and then transferring and finishing up for you thank you so participants does anyone have a question they like to add and if not I just pasted a bunch into the chat that I hear every year when we had mr. Ritter's College and Career chats so if our panelist would like to answer any of those questions if you read the question and then share your thoughts I realize there's a lot of questions I put their thank you David go ahead so for the living on campus question I feel like us first years can't really answer that be I know I was only in my dorms for like 10 days so but I know a Mia was in his fourth year so he might be able to expand on that let's see I lived for two years my first year was in like the dorms like with the general student population mostly freshmen and you know it's kind of a big switch going from you not having your own room normally in high school or I don't know your guys wishing but that's was mine and then living with roommates and so I like you you got to be able to be flexible and kind of like adjust with you know living with new people and then the year after that actually moved into a teen program native american-themed program in UC Berkeley of so they have their own dorms and that we like sweets so like they were way better than the first-year dorms I stayed in and honestly it's like really really fun because you get to do the community with your your floor and you know have a lot of fun with each other so it's a good experience living on campus I also have not lived on campus yet but I will say that you are able well I don't know how, this is but it's something I wondered and high school is that you are able to choose your roommate at least at UCLA like meet people online and then like select each other which is kind of nice because you kind of know what you're getting into oh that's that's a nice way of doing it Myra that sometimes your your floor is everyone that is in your major so like the people that you're already taking classes with so that you're already like familiar with friends so if you're considering staying at the dorms even even in pandemic X like it should be a place where you can find camaraderie in and build community one thing I was going to say about Chad on the Sophia was that I would recommend joining your schools like class page so the class like whatever School class of 2025 you'll meet a lot of people on there that are always going to be looking for Nathan just friends in general so that will also help with that process with a roommate if you have one if you get the opportunity if they will know that it's because they didn't yet have roommates but if not at least you'll have like friends to start reaching out to thank you anyone else is on this question I have something out of left field and not really related siegmeyer stereotype that like if you go to a community college or not receiving the same level of Education as want to share that in my experience my was in that little minute video you showed me he received his PhD from Brown and while teaching a CR multiple courses they're so like I'm going to steal your butt like getting up what is it ivy league level adjectives so I do not like it's not that there's not that big of a discrepancy between like that level of Education they're actually receiving mentioning I do feel like there is a sense like I'm not going to call I'm going to community college and I'm thinking the word colleges in that sentence or in that you know where he is so I really want to encourage the students are here in those who will watch later like if you're planning on going to community college or going to college your professor is they have earned their degrees just like anyone at any other university so I'm I really I would love to see more people saying that as an option especially an affordable one. also like off of that I did go to Bailey like my fall semester and then I just transferred to Bute for spring and just being at Butte for even like two months now personally for me the level of Education that view is like if not a little bit harder than it set Baylor so like taking classes at both the colleges like just showed me like it really does not matter you know what the ranking of the college or like what the college's I think it what matters is the professors that you have and what you're taking and where going to leave you and sometimes it is just too financially better option to do and I didn't want to it you were saying sahlberg is that when you go to a community college or just starting there so few have plans to go to a 4-year eventually like you can always transfer and that's like something to look into you can always finish where you've always wanted to go if CR or view or any Community College like is the first route who is covid I think smart choice thank you that to Vanessa thank you go ahead yeah I'd like to think she Frozen I want to see that have really great support systems and programs for you so definitely check out you know their food pantry any likes food resources any reproductive Health Resources help education they have amazing resources as do like you know for years but I've noticed that my friends who went to community colleges they were like way more prepared and like when they went to their you know up to their neck go like the fifth third degrees they got out of there within like to blend a house for years like they were they were on it and so I've yeah so definitely don't let call it Community College just reach you cuz I think like Caleb said or someone else a lot of the professors are going to teach at the local universities I know it's one of the professors at Hsu also teach at CR so you're getting the same education and then Me on the piano chance to weigh-in I think she might be unfrozen in there go ahead yeah I was going to say also that it's really common in four years also to have a lot of transfer students to and they form their own communities like of transfer students at that school Forsyth what networks you know for those types of students so you know like don't get discouraged or don't feel like that is like a where you're going to end up for anything because they're really just springboard's of what you want to go thank you Anna ready to give it a try again can you hear me or see me that my wife I can't find my phone now but what I was going to say it's not it's kind of related but not like I'm not addict me to call Ajay Michiko and my whole entire I suppose. I told myself I'm not going to Chico because a party school you can't go there and yes it can be true to send a green all schools are party schools I don't think that you should like make a decision based off After experiencing it like there are a lot of people that don't party at a lot of schools too and that she has something to take into consideration it's kind of like looking down like with community colleges to so haven't gone to Chico State I I completely feel. I had a great experience there and anything can be that place if that's what you're looking for Myra go ahead wanted to share that I did go to Community College then I transferred from Napa Valley College to Humboldt State University and because because I would even a front load some of your mic who's out of Community College I only did two I'm only going to do two years at Humboldt State and so it helps you save money it's quality education and if you're not College Bound Rihanna friends and you can get really really good training at a community college even if you're just interested in in in doing it in and not so much for like for a living if you just want to let you know take some cool classes think that's a really good option that you should you should not pass up in in terms of saving money I wanted to point out that whenever you see like the estimates of cost of attendance books and tuition and to be late a lot of it and if you go to a community college if you fill out your FAFSA you might get free tuition and if you play your cards right instead of buying your books brand new books that you're never going to see and Wrentham Wrentham and at the end of it after you get your you're a sending back thanks Myra I'd like to ask another question of our panelist here and hearing from someone from every Dimension would be great so about and sometimes students wonder about like how do you register for your classes okay I've been accepted I buy put in my SAR and now what do I do like how do you know what classes to take does anyone remember how that works kind are you sure okay so for UC Berkeley I don't know if it's different for csu's or something but there's like cow portal that you would use call I'm calcentral and I'm so like you sign up for all your classes through that portal and you know you you know which classes to sign up for based on like what major you're going for you know you can talk to your academic advisor and they can help you out a lot actually that's I think the best advice I can give is talk to your academic advisor in become friends with them so they can help you through that college Journey but yeah and Sophia is it the same at UCLA as what Amia is describing at Berkeley pretty much yeah so about a month before freshman start in the fall quarter there is an orientation and most of the focus of that is just tearing out what you're going to take in the fall and for the rest of freshman year and then they're also like you can just Google like UCLA and then your major and then like class schedule plan and you can like get an idea of what other people have steak into the Builder major requirements thank you I'm OCR Orem Community College I had who I like to call selberg 2.0 her name is Angela to the counselor we set up a meeting time and she had all her stuff ready to go and we literally took 2 hours and plan entire year I didn't stick to that plan and I've changed it a lot but that the idea is she sat there with me and laid out entire Year's worth of classes what I could do what I didn't want to do and she was incredibly helpful and just ask and those people will be there to make that stuff happen that's their job and they want to help you for me like at Baylor first day also. orientation where you basically zoomed in with your academic advisor and claim to the year and then when I was transferring to Butte I kind of made I had a two-hour meeting with my academic advisor Butte and we kind of made a 4-year plan for me so I would cuz I'm kind of going into like an accelerated program so I need to take some classes over the summer so I needed to know in advance like okay this is what's easiest to take during summer this is offered do my biggest piece of advice is just all right off the bat getting to know you can I make advisor who they are setting up a meeting I had something similar where I had to orientation in thing that was all day and I was grouped with a lot of other health science Majors so we are kind of all together but I also knew that I had prereqs or like I had to complete so I did General sense of like what needed to be done first so like no matter what your major as you should probably know like what you need to take if you need to go into a different program so I laid there. find me and then he just went through the portal and you get online someone checks it off and says okay or good and that was basically it so anyone else care to share how things worked for you at your site or you feel like that's been covered with our answer so far no I I would like to know because so many of you were talking about like oh try different classes you know exploring all the possibilities what's the best class taken at this point if it's been your first year if it's been your fourth year you're out what is the very best class so if I can hear from each of you very quickly that might wrap up our evening yeah I'll search my favorite class that I've taken I'm taking it this semester and it's an accelerated class is my health education class I didn't ever think that that would interest me and then learning more about like how our bodies how we like when we consume food like what we get from it where we don't get from it is just it's really interesting thank you Caleb I have a philosophy class something right now and it's something I never take a class in and it's honestly probably my favorite class like ever including like prior education cuz it's just like I get to talk about and speak on topics that I never thought I would be asked for homework like for example question like of the week was on what would you do if you had two minutes to days or 20 days to live like that was a homework question for the week and it's like what please like that like once a week as to stuff I never would I actually get to talk or learn about and it's like opening a new area of Psych expertise but like just learning pawsibilities I would say Anna I really like my philosophy classes while they took last semester it was really fun it wasn't like philosophical is that like what would you do that and I have time to like my teacher was more interactive which I liked but overall I think my child development classes in my favorite like right now I get to like raise my own child and I get to learn about the different stages of childhood which is fun and how the brain kind of works so I really liked that thank you but it's really did that's it really that will question cuz I love the one of my classes but I say maybe there's a 2 years that I was there I would say maybe my food politics class and my Environmental Studies class with an emphasis in indigenous feminism or to the indigenous Blends those are amazing classes and fascinating thank you. Be I'm definitely psychology for sure just cuz I'm really interested in like focusing on the brain like the work I want to do later on in life so that was just really cool to learn about for me Sophia UCLA is on the quarter system so I'm like just finishing winter quarter like this week I just had my Fletcher the class earlier today but I took intro to ethical Theory and what am I like Netflix quarantine binges when the good place in the professor like works on the good place other Consultants though I was like super excited take it it was like kind of a lot of work but I really enjoyed it thank you Myra go ahead the good place is my favorite show so I'm very jealous interesting class that I've taken was a film studies class which is kind of like sat around and watched a bunch of classical movie movies and then we talked about them thank you and Emil you get the final word well I say my favorite class I've taken was this non-western like forms of healthcare and how they like take care of people in different parts of the world which was completely not related to me like you know measure anything which is important that you actually take classes outside of your major so yeah just thought I should have that in there thank you I think that would be the last thing I wanna do is just you know college allows Brett and so they want you know a lot about different things but they also want you to be able to go deep in your subject matter so I'm this is Harmon any final words for our group tonight thank you everyone for being here yeah I just wanted to thank that ready for showing up and being here and sharing your experiences and it was great to see all your little faces to I was hard to miss you guys at graduation so I II Olive thank you so much everyone for being here and folks I'll be staying online while people exit so if you wanted a chance just to check quickly I think this is Herman probably has to go take care of some kids but if you can stay of course that would be great but I'll hang out while people are logging off thank you everyone panelists interpreters and Jess I buy congratulations on your all your everything and good luck on your future Nevers y'all are killing it super inspirational I'm going to log out thank you so much and and Myra bye have a good evening
